The Farm and the Fiction
For decades, the Beswick factory in Stoke-on-Trent produced the world’s most beloved animal figures. While they are famous for their Beatrix Potter range, the serious collector market often revolves around their realistic farm animals and horses.
The “Connoisseur” range of horses (often matte finish on wooden plinths) appeals to equestrian lovers, but the big money often lies in rare colourways. A standard bay shire horse might be £40, but the same mould in “Iron Grey” or a specific “Rocking Horse Grey” can be worth significantly more.
Collector’s Tip: Check the legs! Beswick animals are notorious for breaking at the ankles. A professional restoration can be almost invisible to the naked eye. Shine a UV (black) light over the legs and ears of any figure you intend to buy. Modern glues and paints will fluoresce differently than the original glaze, instantly revealing any repairs.
Also, ensure the “Beswick England” stamp is present; unmarked figures are often “seconds” or factory rejects.
